What is Social Enterprise?

The extensive use of the term social enterprise is fairly recent. The term has many definitions, although the following quote from the Department of Trade and Industry's report Social Enterprise: a strategy for success, published in 2002 describes it as,

"A social enterprise is a business with primarily social objectives whose surpluses are principally reinvested for that purpose in the business or in the community, rather than being driven by the need to maximise profit for shareholders and owners."

 

About the Academy

The Social Enterprise Academy was set up in 2004 as a responsive social business with the capacity to tailor learning and development for people working in, or towards, a leadership role in the social economy.  Our approach is to encourage innovation and creativity by focussing on individual participants and their personal development as entrepreneurial leaders.

Whilst the Academy is a social enterprise itself, we deliver courses to the public, private, as well as the social economy sector.  We can also tailor our modules to create an in-house learning programme to suit your organisation.

We can help you to build a personal development plan and achieve your full potential through learning.  Our programmes can also be designed to help organisations put together a programme of skills development to support change and growth.
